Nexen pipeline near Fort McMurray fails spilling 31000 barrels of emulsion

CALGARY — The Alberta Energy Regulator says it’s responding to a pipeline failure in the oilsands region.The pipeline is operated by Nexen, a Canadian company that was taken over by China’s CNOOC Ltd. a few years ago.The AER says the company estimates more than 31,000 barrels of emulsion spilled about 36 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray, Alta.It says the source of the release has been effectively stopped and there have not been any reports of impacts on wildlife.Nexen has started its emergency response plan and has begun cleaning up the affected area.The regulator says the spill was mainly along the pipeline’s route and has not flowed into any body of water.The Canadian Press
