Jamaica celebrates National Heroes Day

August 31, 2020

first_imgJamaica celebrated National Heroes Day on Monday with political leaders urging closer unity and the need to continue promoting the island’s proud heritage.“Great heritage to promote” “The preservation and continuity of our rich and deeply rooted history, heritage and culture spans generations, and our indomitable spirit is a part of the fabric that makes us who we are as a nation. We have a great heritage to promote and a great legacy to protect,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said in his message to mark the occasion. He said young people in particular “need to know, embrace, and treasure our Jamaican history and culture, and face the challenges of the future with confidence, optimism and hope.”National Heroes Day was observed under the theme “’A Great Heritage… A Great Legacy.” Holness said he wanted all nationals to internalize, appreciate and bring the theme to the forefront of their daily existence.Opposition Leader’s messageIn his message, Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips, said Jamaicans should recognize and celebrate the achievements of the national heroes.“Collectively, their exploits and accomplishments have paved the way for Jamaica to move from plantation slavery to nationhood,” Phillips said, noting, “however, we need to bear in mind that with each passing year, fewer and fewer Jamaicans have any living memory of any of our heroes.“It is therefore of the utmost importance that we utilize the media, the classroom and our creative artists to inform and educate our children of the great heritage and the great legacy that we have inherited,” he said.Praise for security forcesPhillips praised members of the security forces who place their lives at risk daily; teachers, health care workers and other public sector workers who often give their personal time and resources to ensure that national social services are effectively managed.“Respect is also due to the thousands of Jamaicans who give voluntary service through their citizens’ associations, neighborhood watches or youth clubs, on behalf of their fellow citizens,” he added. The day was also marked by Jamaica’s Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen presenting over 100 Jamaicans with respective Jamaican honors, bestowed on them by the government this year in recognition for their service to the nation.last_img read more

Jamaica Tallawahs captain upset about lack of home support in South…

August 31, 2020

first_imgJamaica Tallawahs captain Andre Russell has lamented the lack of home advantage provided by the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium, following his side’s heavy defeat to Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League on Saturday night.Tallawahs played their first two home games at Sabina Park and host the other three at the venue  located in Lauderhill, Florida. However, Saturday’s contest did not seem like a home advantage for the Tallawahs as Amazon Warriors were greeted with vocal support from spectators, something that was not lost on an “upset” Russell.“I’m very unhappy at the moment. The guys fought tonight (Saturday). I think when you have a good thing going and you actually lose a game, sometimes these things happen in cricket where you just have to pick yourself up and try and get stronger and grow from strength to strength,” the all-rounder explained.think based on tonight’s game, it wasn’t like a home game. It didn’t feel that way. Every boundary, every wicket [the reaction] was going Guyana’s way. [Shimron] Hetmyer came out and played some good shots and just the crowd being at his back, it kind of gave him a pump and it shouldn’t be like that.”He continued: “I think we should have that home advantage when a guy hits a boundary, he hears silence. That’s how home advantage is supposed to be. It’s not supposed to be in conditions where you have to wonder.“You [as the home team] hit a four, you hit a six you’re not hearing nothing because Guyana’s crowd is out here and they want to see Guyana do well.”The 21-year-old Hetmyer slammed exactly 100 off 49 balls to leave Tallawahs chasing 210 for victory. However, their batsmen failed to cope with a difficult and a hostile crowd, and crumbled to 138 all out in the 17th over, losing by 71 runs.Russell said the Tallawahs had found it difficult both when they bowled and batted, and conceded it had impacted the team’s motivation.“Guys were upset, I was upset. When I got off the field I was throwing shoes and everything around the changing room … this is how upsetting these things can be,” Russell said.“You want to know that the crowd is behind you on your home turf so if we go to Barbados we see a sea of blue then we expect that. If you’re playing a home game you want to feel the home advantage – if you get a wicket you hear a loud cheer. It gives the bowlers energy, even if you’re tired.“A lot of Guyanese live here, a lot of Trinis live here and I think that’s already a proper home advantage. I hope that we can just win the next two games.”Tallawahs lost to champions Trinbago Knight Riders on Sunday night, and will next  face Barbados Tridents next Wednesday.last_img read more

Gary McGann – Irish tax doubling will hurt ‘home heroes’ like Paddy Power Betfair

DSWV – German online restrictions will not stand up to channelisation demands

Germany’s 16 Lander (states) have maintained controversial sports betting policies including capping player deposits limits to €1000 per month and restricting in-play market wagering.Dahms urges Lander executives to rethink policies and standards with regards to online sports betting to protect German consumers from black market actors.“A rigid set of rules that cannot be changed in the next few years will neither help player protection nor will it push back the black market that will continue to exist in the future,” he said.In his statement, Dahms underlines that current frameworks will fail to secure an appropriate level of consumer channelisation to regulated market services, should the German market open in July 2021.Advising stakeholders, Dahm urges that the Bundesrat should be preparing a ‘transitional regulatory framework’ to ensure its ‘channel demands’ – protecting online gambling consumers and safeguarding its new marketplace.“Certified and reliable sports betting providers should not have to switch off their gaming products by 2021 and leave them to the black market providers,” Dahms continued. “In the meantime, customers will not stop playing and should rather be able to do so in a protected area of reliable providers.”last_img read more
