This will be his third appearance in Ireland in his last four outings and Midgley admits the prize money on offer means it makes sense. “He likes travelling and I’m amazed more don’t go over to be honest,” said Midgley. “Most probably think it’s a hassle but it’s less travelling for us to get to the Curragh than it takes to get to Goodwood and the prize money is fantastic. “He’s in great form still, he has been all year, and the only one he meets wrong at the weights is Dikta Del Mar. “If he gives his running, like he has been doing all year, then he’s the one to beat. It will be nice to give Joseph (O’Brien) a winner. “Fingers crossed he runs his race, that’s all you can ask of him.” Robert Cowell is sending two over from Newmarket, Iffranesia and Speed Hawk, David Marnane runs Jamesie with Johnny Murtagh represented by the three-year-old Kasbah. The presence of Thousand Stars in the concluding Toomey’s Applegreen Filling Station (Ladies) Handicap ensures that there will not be many leaving Tipperary early, as the great hurdling grey has his first start on the level for over six years. Paul Midgley expects Monsieur Joe to prove tough to beat in the Kilfrush Stud Abergwaun Stakes at Tipperary on Friday. It is amazing to note the subsequent dual French Champion Hurdle hero actually finished in the rear in a 50 to 80 event at Fairyhouse in June 2009, and it wasn’t too long after that when Willie Mullins assumed control of the now 11-year-old. Mullins’ son Patrick recently put Thousand Stars’ longevity down to the level of head-man Dick Dowling’s care for the French-bred. He also revealed there has never been any drop-off in the stable stalwarts enthusiasm for his home work. It was the usual up to scratch performance from the 12-times scorer when he finished sixth last time in the Galway Hurdle, under one of his most regular jockeys, Katie Walsh. The leading lady rider again takes the reins at Tipperary and it will be fascinating to watch how things transpire in this extended mile-and-a-half event. A Flat assessment of 68 is clearly appealing. Elsewhere, the Dan Dooley Ford Centre Handicap has split to form an eight-race card, with Johnny Levins and Gary Carroll represented in both divides. Their runner in the 7.45, Hard Times, now makes his third appearance for the Curragh-based outfit and it looks as though he may now be poised to strike. Hard Times was formerly under the tutelage of Tom McCourt, who is on record as describing the Moss Vale gelding’s displays on the gallops at home as exceptional. He has obviously never brought that to the racecourse, but an ease in the ground now, and this seven-furlong trip, should give him every opportunity to break his maiden on attempt number 18. Levins and Carroll go into battle half an hour later with Aye Aye Skipper but Jembatt is preferred here. The eight-year-old has been in the form of his life this season, winning a big pot at York and finishing second to stablemate Desert Law in the Dash at Epsom. He handled the step up to Listed company when narrowly beaten by Out Do in the City Walls Stakes and was not beaten far in a Group Two at the Curragh last time out. Press Association
LOS ANGELES — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts got defensive Wednesday when asked about the offensive potholes in his lineup.Four of the starting nine went into Wednesday’s game with batting averages below .200. Only two (Mookie Betts at .281 and A.J. Pollock at .280) were over .250 and the team had batted a collective .199 in the previous eight games (four wins and four losses).“It happens every year that a group of guys aren’t swinging the bat well,” Roberts said. “We have this conversation every year. Every manager does. I think the guys are handling it well. We just have to be more consistent about scoring consistently. Runs per game (5.0 through Tuesday’s loss) we’re at the top, near the top going into last night. So it’s just about going out there and continuing to take good at-bats.”The loss of Corey Seager — he was hitting .340 — has certainly impacted the lineup. But the collective slump runs counter to expectations that the Dodgers had put together a lineup with so much depth this wouldn’t happen. Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season “There might be something to that,” Roberts said. “Whether the player admits it or not when you’re following up an MVP campaign, you certainly put expectations on yourself. But our messaging has been just go out there, compete, take good at-bats and help us win baseball games. But individually, I’m sure there is some element of ‘I want to do what I did last year’ and that’s natural.”Bellinger tried to make some alterations in his setup at the plate during summer camp but has largely abandoned those. He has never been “right mechanically” since the season started, Roberts said, calling it “a work in progress.”Opposing teams are pitching him differently this season as well, Roberts said, in that they are each pitching him different “whether it’s top of the zone, these guys (the Padres) are trying to crowd him. Some guys are trying to spin him.”All of it is working lately.“There’s many pitches that he’s not getting to this year that he should, and that he has, and that he will,” Roberts said. “When you’re not mechanically right you miss pitches and then they start to expand. Then, at times you chase. That’s just kind of the whole thought behind any hitter, especially when they’re struggling.“That’s kind of it. You get pitches that you should end the at-bat and you don’t. You find yourself in tougher counts and swing at pitcher’s pitches. And when you do square the ball up it seems like a defender is there. But Cody’s working every day and I have no doubt he’ll get out of it.”SEAGER PROGRESSSeager missed his fifth consecutive game with a back injury. But he took a significant step closer to returning by participating in the Dodgers’ pregame workout, taking batting practice on the field for the first time since the injury, running and continuing to take ground balls from coach Dino Ebel.Roberts said there is still no target for Seager’s return but when he does rejoin the lineup it will likely be as the DH for a number of games before sees any time at shortstop.ALSOIn order to add right-hander Tony Gonsolin to the active roster for Wednesday’s game, lefty reliever Adam Kolarek was optioned back to the alternate training site. …Former Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is joining FOX Deportes as a baseball analyst. Gonzalez will make his debut as part of the coverage of Friday’s Dodgers-Angels game. Adrian’s brother, Edgar, also works for FOX Deportes and the two could broadcast games together in the future.Related Articles Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Roberts said he still believes those expectations will be met.“Absolutely,” he said. “It’s baseball. Guys are trying. It’s what 12, 14 games. It’s baseball. Guys aren’t gonna always be hot. Actually the bottom of the order has been picking us up at times. So, I have no concern about our lineup righting the ship and scoring runs consistently.”BELLINGER BATTLENo one in the lineup has sunk into a deeper hole than Cody Bellinger. The reigning MVP went into Wednesday’s game batting .167 with a .485 OPS. Roberts benched him for a game in Arizona last week and Bellinger responded with home runs in each of his first two games back in the lineup and a multi-hit game. But he was just 3 for his last 23 (.130) before Wednesday and Roberts acknowledged Bellinger might be pressing to live up to the expectations created by his 2019 MVP season.

Gonzalo is doing the maximum with Sarri.”
